The Commercial Health Check.
One to two weeks, a few hours of your time, and a written answer to one question: where is my money leaking?
Thirty minutes, no charge, and an honest view of whether the health check is worth your money.
Carried out personally by Bilal Amdhala MCIOB, a quantity surveyor and Chartered Member of the CIOB, with more than seven years of commercial management on construction and long-term contracts. See the record and cases →
Not sure whether you need one? Two minutes, no email needed.
Take the ten-question check →- Retention held on finished jobs, not yet applied for
- £14,200 held; £6,800 past its release date now
- Extra work instructed on site, never billed
- est. £4,300 to £7,900 a year
- Payment applications going in below the value of the work
- est. £3,000 to £5,600 a year
- Quotes sent and not followed up
- est. £8,000 to £12,000 a year of winnable work
- The owner's time on month-end paperwork
- about 9 hours a week
- 1.Apply for the retention that is due. £6,800 is contractually due now across three completed contracts. Money already earned, not new work.
- 2.Record extra work when it is instructed. A written confirmation the same day, sent from the phone on site, turns a verbal instruction into a variation that can be priced and applied for.
- 3.Prepare the application from the records. Month-end takes two hours, goes in on the contract date, and carries the substantiation behind every line, so a short certification has something to answer.
PDF, nine pages. A worked example, illustrative figures.
Three moves, and a few hours of your time.
One call, about an hour
A video call, booked at a time that suits you - early morning, lunchtime or evening in the week, and weekends between 12 and 6. We walk through how work actually flows: how an enquiry becomes a job, a job becomes an invoice, and an invoice becomes money in the bank.
A short document list
We send a list of what to gather - typically recent quotes, invoices, a note of who owes you and how long for, and, for contractors, applications, variations and retentions. You send it to a private shared folder - no new software, nothing to install. The week starts when the records we agreed are with us, and the report covers those records and the jobs we agree at the start.
The written report, within a week of your documents
Six to ten pages: what the records show, what each leak costs per month or per year, and the three fixes worth doing first, ranked by money recovered against effort. Where the review finds retention or unbilled work, the schedule is in the report and usable the same day. Yours to act on, with us or without us.

Findings with numbers on them, and the workings shown.
A priced list of leaks. Unclaimed retentions, variations that never became money, quotes going out late, invoices chased from memory: each one written down with what it costs you.
The £500 comes off the build in full, so the health check is not where we make money and there is nothing to gain by inflating what it finds. For contractors, pipeline, variations, retentions and applications are reviewed as standard.
If the report does not find at least £500 of money you can recover or save, the fee comes back.
Judged on the report's own figures, so the test is on the page, not in anyone's opinion.
- What counts
- Unclaimed retentions, unpriced variations, unbilled work, and time and cost savings, each costed with the workings shown.
- How it is paid
- By card through a secure payment link, before the work starts. The moment it clears, you book the call.
- If you go on
- Within 90 days, the £500 comes off the implementation in full.
A paid diagnosis means our only incentive is the truth, including "your house is in order" if that is the finding. Read the Health Check terms.
Thirty minutes, no charge.
A few hours in total: one call of about an hour, gathering the documents, and reading the report. You carry on running your business while the review is done.
That is entirely your choice. You can act on the report yourself, or ask us to build the fixes: implementation is scoped and fixed at £3,000 to £4,500, with the £500 credited within 90 days. For a contract that needs running month by month, there is the Monthly Application Service, which covers the application alone, or Monthly Commercial Support, which covers the whole commercial side from £750 a month per contract. Where retention is overdue or at risk, the Retention Recovery sprint gets it moving. There is no obligation either way.
It is for owner-run construction and trades firms, roughly 1 to 20 people, that quote, invoice or apply for payment and suspect money is going astray. If you already have a quantity surveyor or a commercial manager on staff, you probably do not need it, and we will say so in the first conversation.
Then the report says so, and the fee comes back under the guarantee. Some owners take the check for that reason alone.
